The Bikini Beach
Maafushi's bikini beach is located on the western side of the island and is the designated area where tourists can wear swimwear freely. This is the most popular beach on the island and the spot where most visitors spend their time. The beach is a stretch of white sand facing the open ocean, with turquoise water that is shallow enough for comfortable wading and swimming. Sun loungers are available for rent from nearby guesthouses and water sports operators, and some establishments offer beach chairs and umbrellas as part of their services. The bikini beach can get busy during peak season, especially in the midday hours, but it remains a beautiful spot with genuinely stunning water colours. The area is screened from the rest of the island by fencing and vegetation, creating a separate zone where Western beachwear is accepted.
The Local Beach
The eastern side of Maafushi, facing the inner atoll, has the local beach where residents swim and relax. This is not a bikini beach, so visitors should wear modest clothing if they want to swim here. Locals, particularly women and children, use this beach in the afternoons and evenings. The atmosphere is more community-focused, and spending time here gives you a different perspective on island life. The water on this side tends to be calmer since it faces the protected lagoon rather than the open ocean. While most tourists gravitate toward the bikini beach, a visit to the local beach offers a chance to see how Maldivians themselves enjoy the water.
Swimming Conditions
The water around Maafushi is warm year-round, with temperatures hovering between 27 and 29 degrees Celsius. The bikini beach has a sandy bottom that slopes gently, making it suitable for all swimming abilities including children. However, the western side can occasionally have stronger currents, especially during the southwest monsoon season from May to October. There are no lifeguards on the beach, so swimmers should exercise normal caution and be aware of current conditions. The water clarity is generally excellent, and even from the beach you can often see fish swimming in the shallows. Reef shoes are not strictly necessary on the main beach but can be useful if you venture towards the rocky areas at either end.
Beach Facilities
The bikini beach area has evolved considerably as tourism has grown on Maafushi. Several water sports operators are based along the beach, offering jet ski rides, parasailing, kayak rental, and other activities. Some guesthouses and restaurants that back onto the beach provide direct beach access and service, allowing you to order food and drinks to your sun lounger. There are no formal changing rooms on the beach itself, but most guesthouses are a short walk away. Fresh water showers are available at some of the water sports centres. The beach is cleaned regularly, and the sand is soft and well maintained. During peak season, the beach area becomes quite social, with travellers from different guesthouses mingling and sharing tips about excursions and restaurants.
Nearby Sandbanks
While Maafushi's beaches are pleasant, some of the most stunning sand in the area is found on the sandbanks accessible by short boat trips. These temporary islands of pristine white sand surrounded by impossibly clear water offer the classic Maldives postcard experience. Several operators on Maafushi run sandbank trips, either as standalone excursions or combined with snorkeling. The sandbanks change shape and location with the tides and seasons, and your operator will know which ones are most impressive on any given day.
