Things to Do in Baa Atoll

Manta encounters, reef diving, cultural heritage, and island exploration

Hanifaru Bay Excursions

The premier activity in Baa Atoll is visiting Hanifaru Bay during the manta ray feeding season, which runs from approximately June through November. Excursion boats depart from resorts and guesthouses throughout the atoll, making the short journey to Hanifaru where a ranger station manages entry. Only snorkeling is permitted inside the bay — scuba diving is banned to minimize disturbance to the feeding mantas. Visitors enter the water in controlled groups and float at the surface as manta rays, sometimes accompanied by whale sharks, perform their feeding acrobatics below. The experience is weather and tide dependent, so flexibility is important, and the most dramatic feeding events tend to occur during new and full moon periods when tidal flows are strongest.

Diving the Biosphere Reserve

Baa Atoll offers excellent diving beyond Hanifaru Bay. The atoll's channels host healthy populations of reef sharks, eagle rays, and large schools of pelagic fish. Dhonfanu Thila is a popular dive site where soft corals coat a submerged pinnacle visited by grey reef sharks and Napoleon wrasse. Nelivaru Haa is another standout, a long reef with overhangs sheltering nurse sharks and large groupers. The interior lagoon thilas provide gentler diving suitable for beginners, with exceptional macro life including frogfish, ghost pipefish, and a variety of nudibranchs hidden among the corals.

Island Hopping and Cultural Visits

A trip to Thulhaadhoo to observe traditional lacquerware production is a highlight that few other atolls can match. Artisans demonstrate the painstaking process of shaping wooden blanks on a lathe and applying layers of colored lacquer in geometric patterns that have remained unchanged for centuries. Purchasing a piece directly from the craftspeople supports this endangered art form. Other inhabited islands offer walks through narrow streets past coral stone mosques, small harbors where fishing dhonis come and go, and local shops where you can try short eats and fresh fruit juice.

Sandbank Visits and Snorkeling

Baa Atoll's numerous uninhabited islands and shifting sandbanks make for perfect day trip destinations. These pristine stretches of white sand surrounded by turquoise water offer the quintessential Maldivian experience. Many excursion operators combine sandbank picnics with snorkeling at nearby reefs, where the healthy coral growth within the biosphere reserve supports an abundance of colorful reef fish and occasional turtle sightings.
