Things to Do in Ari Atoll

From whale shark encounters to sunset sandbank picnics

Whale Shark Excursions

The single most popular activity in Ari Atoll is swimming with whale sharks in the South Ari Marine Protected Area. Unlike most locations worldwide where whale sharks appear seasonally, the waters off South Ari Atoll host a resident population of juvenile whale sharks that can be encountered throughout the year. Excursion boats depart daily from islands like Dhigurah, Dhangethi, and Maamigili, with experienced spotters scanning the surface for the telltale shadows of these enormous filter feeders. When a whale shark is located, snorkelers enter the water in small groups, maintaining a respectful distance of at least three meters as they swim alongside creatures that can reach ten meters or more in length.

Manta Ray Snorkeling

Ari Atoll is home to several well-known manta ray cleaning stations where these graceful animals gather to have parasites removed by small cleaner wrasse. Sites around the outer reef, particularly in the channels between islands, offer reliable manta encounters especially between December and April when the northeast monsoon brings plankton-rich currents into the atoll. Snorkelers float quietly at the surface while mantas glide beneath them in mesmerizing loops, sometimes approaching within arm's reach as they circle back to the cleaning stations.

Diving Adventures

Ari Atoll is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Maldives. The atoll's numerous channels, or kandus, create thrilling drift dives where currents carry divers past walls encrusted with soft corals while grey reef sharks, whitetip reef sharks, and eagle rays patrol below. Notable dive sites include Fish Head (Mushimasmingili Thila), a protected marine area where hundreds of grey reef sharks congregate, and Maaya Thila, a submerged pinnacle alive with night-hunting whitetip sharks. For wreck enthusiasts, there are several intentionally sunk vessels now serving as artificial reefs teeming with marine life.

Resort Day Trips and Sandbank Picnics

Many guesthouses and resorts arrange day trips to uninhabited islands and pristine sandbanks that emerge from the lagoon at low tide. These excursions typically include snorkeling, a barbecue lunch of freshly grilled fish, and hours of relaxation on beaches so white they seem to glow. Resort day-trip packages allow guesthouse visitors to experience the facilities of luxury properties for a day, including overwater restaurants, infinity pools, and spa treatments. Island hopping by dhoni — the traditional Maldivian boat — between inhabited islands is another rewarding way to experience the diversity of the atoll, visiting fishing communities, small shops, and local cafes along the way.
