How to Get to Ari Atoll

Seaplanes, speedboats, and domestic flights from Malé

Seaplane Transfers

The most scenic and popular way to reach Ari Atoll's resorts is by seaplane. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) and Maldivian Air Taxi operate scheduled transfers from the seaplane terminal adjacent to Velana International Airport in Malé. The flight takes between 20 and 35 minutes depending on the specific island destination, offering breathtaking aerial views of the atolls, reefs, and lagoons below. Seaplanes operate only during daylight hours, typically from 6:00 AM to 3:30 PM, so travelers arriving on late international flights will need to spend a night in Malé or at an airport hotel before continuing to their resort the following morning.

Speedboat from Malé

The northern reaches of Ari Atoll, including Rasdhoo and some North Ari islands, are accessible by speedboat from Malé in approximately 90 minutes to two hours. Several resorts and guesthouses operate their own speedboat transfers, which can be arranged at the time of booking. Public ferries also connect Malé to various inhabited islands in both North and South Ari Atoll, though these services are slower, taking three to four hours, and run on fixed schedules that may require careful planning. Speedboat transfers are available at any time of day or night, making them a practical option for travelers arriving on late flights who want to reach their accommodation without an overnight stay in the capital.

Domestic Flights to Maamigili

Maamigili airport, located on the island of Maamigili in South Ari Atoll, receives domestic flights from Velana International Airport operated by Maldivian Airlines and other domestic carriers. The flight takes roughly 25 minutes and provides an affordable alternative to seaplane transfers, particularly for travelers heading to the southern part of the atoll. From Maamigili airport, speedboat transfers to nearby islands including Dhigurah, Dhangethi, and several resorts take between 10 and 45 minutes. This route is especially convenient for budget travelers staying in guesthouses on South Ari's inhabited islands, as it avoids the premium cost of seaplane transfers while still offering quick access to the whale shark region.

Planning Your Transfer

When booking accommodation in Ari Atoll, it is important to coordinate your transfer arrangements in advance. Resort guests will typically have transfers arranged by their property, with costs either included in the room rate or charged separately. Guesthouse travelers should communicate their flight arrival times with their hosts, who can arrange speedboat pickups from Maamigili airport or advise on public ferry schedules. During the southwest monsoon season from May to October, sea conditions can be rougher, making speedboat transfers less comfortable — this is when seaplanes or domestic flights become the preferred option for many travelers.
