Getting Around the Maldives

With over 1,190 islands scattered across 90,000 square kilometres of ocean, transport in the Maldives is an experience in itself. Here is how to navigate between islands.

Speedboats

Private speedboat transfers are the most common way to reach resorts and guesthouses in atolls close to Male — generally within a 90-minute ride. Resorts in North and South Male Atoll, as well as nearby atolls like Vaavu and parts of Ari Atoll, typically arrange speedboat pickups from the airport.

Resort speedboat transfers usually cost between USD 100 and USD 300 per person for a round trip, depending on distance. The boats are enclosed, air-conditioned vessels that seat 10 to 30 passengers. Journey times range from 20 minutes for nearby resorts to around 90 minutes for more distant ones.

For independent travellers visiting local islands, private speedboat charters are also available but tend to be expensive. It is more budget-friendly to use public ferries or shared speedboats where available. See how island transport works for more on the transport system connecting island communities.

Public Ferries

The government-run public ferry network, operated by Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) under the brand "RaajjeTransport," connects inhabited islands across the country. These ferries are the most affordable way to travel between islands.

Public ferries are an excellent option for budget travellers exploring local islands, but you will need to plan around the schedules. Guesthouse owners on local islands are typically very helpful with ferry timetable advice.

Seaplanes

Seaplanes are an iconic part of the Maldives experience and the primary way to reach resorts in atolls beyond speedboat range — typically those more than 90 minutes from the airport by sea. Trans Maldivian Airways (TMA) is the largest seaplane operator, with the world's biggest fleet of DHC-6 Twin Otter seaplanes. Maldivian Air Taxi also provides seaplane services.

Domestic Flights

For reaching the more distant atolls, particularly in the south, domestic flights offer a faster alternative to ferries. Several regional airports serve inhabited islands and resort clusters:

Some resorts use a combination of a domestic flight and a speedboat transfer — for example, flying to Dharavandhoo airport and then taking a short boat ride to a resort in Baa Atoll.

Comparing Your Options

The right transport mode depends on where you are going, your budget, and your schedule:

Getting Around Islands

Once you are on an island, getting around is simple. Most inhabited islands are small enough to walk across in 15 to 30 minutes. In Male, taxis are available, and motorcycles and bicycles are common. On resort islands, many properties offer buggies for getting around, especially larger resorts. On local islands, bicycles can often be rented from guesthouses for a small fee or borrowed for free.
