Thoddoo sits in North Ari Atoll, approximately 67 kilometres northwest of Malé. The island is well connected by both public ferry and private speedboat, making it accessible for travellers on different budgets and schedules.
Speedboat Transfer
The fastest and most convenient way to reach Thoddoo is by private speedboat transfer arranged through your guesthouse. The journey from Malé takes approximately 90 minutes, crossing open water between the atolls. Speedboat transfers typically cost between 50 and 70 US dollars per person each way, though prices can vary depending on the season and the number of passengers sharing the boat. Most guesthouses will arrange transfers as part of the booking process and will send a boat to collect you from the airport or from Malé harbour. The ride can be bumpy during the southwest monsoon season from May to October, so motion sickness medication is worth considering if you are prone to seasickness.
Public Ferry
The government-operated ferry service connects Malé to Thoddoo on specific days of the week. The journey takes approximately three to four hours depending on intermediate stops. Ferry tickets are very affordable, costing just a few US dollars, making this the budget option. However, ferries do not run daily, and schedules can change, so it is essential to confirm the timetable before planning your trip. Ferries depart from the Villingili Ferry Terminal in Malé. The boats are basic but adequate, with covered seating and limited luggage space. During rough weather, ferry services may be cancelled or delayed.
Combining with Other Islands
Thoddoo is often visited as part of a wider exploration of North Ari Atoll. The neighbouring islands of Rasdhoo and Ukulhas are both popular guesthouse destinations and can be reached by local boats or speedboats from Thoddoo. Some travellers spend a few nights on each island, creating an island-hopping itinerary through the atoll. Boat transfers between these islands are short, typically thirty to sixty minutes, and can be arranged through your guesthouse.
Arrival Tips
If you are arriving in the Maldives on an international flight and heading straight to Thoddoo, coordinate with your guesthouse in advance so the speedboat is ready when you clear customs. For late afternoon or evening arrivals, you may need to spend a night in Malé or Hulhumalé before catching a morning transfer. Bring sun protection and water for the speedboat journey, as there is no shade on smaller boats and the tropical sun is intense even when the wind feels cool.
