Beaches of Rasdhoo

A gorgeous bikini beach, a picture-perfect sandbank, and the crystal-clear waters of a tiny Maldivian atoll

For such a small island, Rasdhoo punches well above its weight when it comes to beach quality. The designated bikini beach on the eastern shore is one of the loveliest on any local island in the Maldives, and the sandbank excursion within the atoll lagoon provides the kind of postcard-perfect experience that defines a Maldivian holiday. The combination of soft white sand, crystal-clear water, and the intimate scale of the island creates a beach experience that feels both luxurious and refreshingly uncommercial.

Bikini Beach

Rasdhoo's bikini beach stretches along the eastern side of the island, a generous expanse of fine white sand facing the open ocean and the outer reef. The beach is well-maintained and sees far fewer visitors than the equivalent beaches on Maafushi, creating a peaceful atmosphere that feels closer to a resort experience than a budget island. The sand is soft underfoot and the water entry is gentle, with a shallow lagoon area that is perfect for swimming and wading. On calm days, the water is remarkably clear, with visibility extending to the sandy bottom several metres out. A few palm trees and sea grape bushes provide natural shade along the back of the beach, and some guesthouses have placed loungers and small shelters for their guests. At the northern end of the beach, the reef begins to encroach closer to shore, providing opportunities for snorkelling directly from the sand.

The Sandbank

The Rasdhoo sandbank is one of the most photographed spots in the Ari Atoll region. Located within the shallow lagoon of Rasdhoo Atoll, this small accumulation of white sand rises barely above the water's surface, surrounded on all sides by graduating shades of turquoise and blue. A boat ride of around 10 minutes brings you from the island to this ethereal spot, where the sense of isolation is extraordinary despite being so close to the inhabited island. Half-day and full-day trips to the sandbank typically include snorkelling in the surrounding waters, a barbecue lunch of grilled fish and rice, and time to simply lie on the sand and absorb the remarkable setting. The sandbank shifts slightly in shape and position with the seasons, but it remains a consistently stunning destination throughout the year.

Swimming and Snorkelling Access

Beyond the main bikini beach, Rasdhoo has several smaller stretches of sand around its perimeter where swimming is possible, though the bikini dress code applies only in the designated area. The western harbour side has a small sandy area that is calmer and more sheltered, though less scenic. For snorkelling, the best access point from shore is the reef edge near the northern end of the bikini beach, where the coral begins in relatively shallow water and the reef slope drops away to deeper blue, hosting a variety of marine life including turtles and reef sharks.
