How to Get to Dhangethi

Dhangethi is located in the southern part of Ari Atoll (Alif Dhaal Atoll), roughly 100 kilometres south of Malé. While not the easiest island to reach, the journey is manageable and well worth the effort for travellers seeking an uncrowded, authentic Maldivian experience near the whale shark zone.

Speedboat Transfer

The most convenient way to reach Dhangethi is by private speedboat transfer arranged through your guesthouse. The journey from Malé takes approximately two hours, depending on sea conditions. Speedboat transfers typically cost between 50 and 70 US dollars per person each way, and guesthouses will coordinate the pickup from either the airport or Malé harbour. The ride crosses open water between the atolls and can be bumpy during the southwest monsoon from May to October. Having motion sickness remedies on hand is advisable if you are sensitive to rough seas.

Public Ferry via Mahibadhoo

The budget option is the public ferry system. Government ferries run from Malé to Mahibadhoo, the capital of Alif Dhaal Atoll, on specific days of the week. The ferry journey takes several hours and costs just a few dollars. From Mahibadhoo, a local boat transfer or shared speedboat reaches Dhangethi in a short time. This route requires more planning and patience, as ferry schedules are limited and connections may involve waiting, but it is the most affordable way to travel. Confirm the current schedule with your guesthouse or the MTCC transport authority before travelling.

Via Maamigili Airport

The nearest domestic airport to Dhangethi is Maamigili, located on the island of the same name in South Ari Atoll. Daily flights from Malé reach Maamigili in about 25 minutes, and from there a short boat transfer brings you to Dhangethi. This option is faster than the speedboat from Malé and avoids the long open-water crossing, though the combined cost of the flight and boat transfer is higher. It is a good choice if you are prone to seasickness or want to minimise travel time.

Combining with Dhigurah

Dhangethi and Dhigurah are close neighbours in South Ari Atoll, and many travellers visit both islands on the same trip. Local boat transfers between the two are short and inexpensive, making it easy to split your time between Dhangethi's quiet atmosphere and Dhigurah's long beach. Your guesthouse can arrange the inter-island transfer with minimal effort.
