Dhangethi Beaches

Dhangethi is a small island, and its beaches are modest compared to the long stretches found on larger islands like Dhigurah. However, what the beaches lack in size they make up for in privacy and tranquillity. On most days, you will have the sand almost entirely to yourself, which is an increasingly rare experience even on local islands in the Maldives.

Bikini Beach

The designated bikini beach on Dhangethi is located at the northern tip of the island, set apart from the village area. This small but pleasant stretch of white sand is where tourists can swim and sunbathe in swimwear. The sand is fine and white, and the water in front is shallow, calm, and clear. A few palm trees provide natural shade, and some guesthouses have placed sun loungers and simple shade structures for their guests. The beach rarely has more than a handful of people on it, and the sense of peace and privacy is one of its strongest features. The lagoon is safe for swimming, and you can wade out a good distance before the water reaches chest height.

Harbour Area

The harbour on Dhangethi is the island's main gathering point and has its own appeal. While not a swimming spot, the harbour area offers a vantage point for watching the comings and goings of fishing boats, the occasional visiting dhoni, and the daily rhythm of the waterfront. The reef edge is visible from the harbour wall, and at certain states of the tide you can see fish and occasionally small reef sharks moving in the shallows. In the evening, residents gather near the harbour to socialise, making it a good place to observe local life.

Snorkeling from Shore

The house reef around Dhangethi is accessible from several points along the shoreline. While not as celebrated as the house reefs of Thoddoo or Dhigurah, it offers decent snorkeling with a mix of coral, reef fish, and the chance of turtle sightings. The reef drops off to deeper water on the atoll side, and this edge is where the most interesting marine life tends to congregate. Your guesthouse can advise on the best entry points depending on current and tidal conditions.

Nearby Sandbanks

For a more expansive beach experience, sandbank excursions by boat are the answer. Several beautiful sandbanks lie within a short boat ride of Dhangethi, offering the classic Maldivian experience of white sand surrounded by deep blue water with no one else in sight. These trips can be combined with snorkeling stops and are a highlight of any stay on Dhangethi. The sandbanks shift and change with the seasons, and your guesthouse will know which ones are at their best during your visit.
